Planning a Switzerland Trip from India
Switzerland is small, expensive and extremely well organised, and the way to enjoy it is to lean on the last of those. The rail, boat and cable-car network runs to the minute and reaches places a car cannot, which is why a rail pass is usually better value than it first appears.
Seven to ten nights is typical, often split between the Bernese Oberland around Interlaken, Lucerne, and one of Zermatt or the Jungfrau region. Budget is the main planning constraint — food and mountain excursions cost noticeably more than in neighbouring countries.
Best Time to Visit Switzerland
- June–September
- Alpine summer. Trails open, lakes warm enough to swim, and all the mountain railways running.
- December–March
- Ski season. Beautiful and busy, with the highest prices of the year over Christmas and New Year.
- April–May
- Shoulder season. Valleys are green and cheap, but some high lifts stay closed for maintenance.
- October–November
- Quiet and often clear, with autumn colour in the valleys. Some resorts close between seasons.

Is a Swiss rail pass worth buying?
Usually, if you are moving between regions rather than staying in one valley. A Swiss Travel Pass covers trains, buses and lake boats, gives free entry to many museums and discounts on mountain railways, which is where Swiss costs concentrate. For a single-base trip it is often cheaper to buy point-to-point tickets.
Do Indian citizens need a visa for Switzerland?
Yes. Switzerland is part of the Schengen Area despite not being in the EU, so a Schengen visa is required in advance for Indian passport holders, with mandatory travel insurance of at least EUR 30,000. See our visa guide, and confirm current requirements with the official Swiss mission.
Is Switzerland very expensive?
It is among the most expensive countries in Europe, and honestly so — food, accommodation and mountain excursions all cost more than in France or Italy. The savings that actually work are self-catering some meals, using a travel pass, and staying in a valley town rather than a resort village.
