About This Shimla Family Holiday Trip

Shimla earned its "Queen of Hills" name under the British, who moved the entire colonial administration here every summer to escape the heat of the plains. What they left behind is unusually walkable for an Indian hill station: a ridge-top promenade closed to traffic, a Gothic church, half-timbered buildings along Mall Road, and a narrow-gauge railway that still climbs from Kalka through 100-odd tunnels.

This package keeps the pace gentle. Days are built around the Ridge and Mall Road, the viewpoints at Kufri, and short excursions rather than long drives, which makes it one of the easier Himalayan trips for families travelling with children or older relatives.

Who This Tour Suits

  • First-time visitors to the Himalayas who want scenery without long mountain drives
  • Families with young children or grandparents, thanks to the short travel days
  • Couples looking for a walkable hill station rather than a trekking base

Know Before You Book

  • Mall Road and the Ridge are pedestrian-only — expect to walk, and bring shoes with grip in winter.
  • Shimla sits at roughly 2,200 m. It is not high enough to cause altitude problems, but evenings are cold even in summer.
  • Snowfall is most likely between late December and February. It is the reason many people come, but it can also delay road transfers.
  • The Kalka-Shimla toy train is a separate ticketed experience and books out in peak season.

What's Included

  • Private cab from Chandigarh for the full trip
  • 3 nights hotel accommodation
  • Daily breakfast and dinner
  • All sightseeing as per itinerary
  • Driver allowance, toll & parking

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Shimla tour suitable for elderly travellers?

Yes. Travel days are short and most sightseeing is concentrated around the Ridge and Mall Road, which are flat and pedestrianised. The main consideration is that Shimla is built on a slope, so there is some walking on inclines between the Mall and the lower bazaar. A private vehicle is included for all transfers.

Will we see snow in Shimla?

Snowfall is most likely from late December through February, and Kufri usually holds snow longer than Shimla town itself. Nobody can guarantee snow on specific dates — it varies year to year. If snow is the priority, January is the safest month to plan for.

How do we reach Shimla, and is the transfer included?

Most guests arrive via Chandigarh, which is roughly a three to four hour drive. Pickup from the nearest airport or railway station is included in the package, along with a private air-conditioned vehicle for the duration of the trip.

What should we pack for Shimla?

Layers in every season. Summer days are mild but evenings drop sharply, and winter needs proper woollens, gloves and waterproof footwear. Comfortable walking shoes matter more here than on most trips because the sightseeing is done on foot.
