About This Journey
Kinnaur sits along the Sutlej on the old trade route towards Tibet, and it feels like a threshold — Hindu and Buddhist practice overlap here, often in the same village and occasionally in the same temple.
The building tradition is the other draw. Kath-Kuni construction alternates courses of timber and dry stone without mortar, which is why these towers have survived centuries of earthquakes. Kalpa, Sangla and the fort at Kamru are the places to see it.

What is Kath-Kuni architecture?
A traditional Himachali technique that stacks alternating layers of dry stone and cedar beams without mortar. The timber courses let the structure flex rather than crack, which is why buildings made this way have survived repeated earthquakes. Kamru Fort and the older houses in Kalpa are good examples.
Do we need a permit for Kinnaur?
Kinnaur itself does not require one for Indian nationals. Inner Line Permits are needed for the restricted stretch beyond, towards Spiti and the Tibet border, and foreign nationals face additional requirements. If your itinerary crosses into that area we arrange permits in advance.
How cold does Kinnaur get?
Villages sit between roughly 2,500 and 3,000 m, so nights are cold in every season and winters are severe with heavy snow. Even in summer, expect a sharp drop after sunset. Warm layers are essential whatever month you travel.
